One of the many trains a day that head to and from Machu Picchu had just arrived disgorging two hundred tourists onto the Ollantaytambo train platform as I made my way to the El Albergue Hotel Ollantaytambo. There was chaos everywhere, with policemen shouting and directing traffic and children crying so stepping into the reception area of this hotel which was the original station house built in 1925 was like stepping into an oasis of calm.

Dark wooden furniture, polished wood floors and old photographs of trains help preserve the spirit of the train station but modern touches including the owner’s vividly coloured paintings hung around the hotel and decorative flashes of colour like the red cushions in the lounge make this hotel the ideal resting place after a long day in the Sacred Valley.

There are only 16 rooms in this hotel which allows for very personalized service and a warm, intimate atmosphere. All rooms have a patio or deck space for lounging and the rooms themselves are surprisingly spacious with high exposed beam ceilings. The decoration is simple, clean and cozy with great quality beds and fabulously soft sheets.

As the evening draws in, sit on the deck sipping a cool drink, listening to the birds and gazing at the mountains towering above. For a bite to eat head to the Albergue Restaurant (one of our favourite places to eat in Ollantaytambo) right next to reception. They have also recently opened a fabulous restaurant on the Main Square in Ollantaytambo called Chuncho.

Owner Wendy Weeks and her son Joaquin who now manages the hotel are dedicated to making the hotel as eco-friendly as possible. You can refill your water bottle with filtered water in the reception, the shampoo and soap in the bathrooms is dispensed in large bottles to reduce packaging waste and Joaquin has started a large organic veggie garden in the fields next to the house to supply the café and restaurant with fresh veggies.

Simply put, El Albergue is one of our favourite hotels in the Sacred Valley. It’s more mid-range than luxury with prices starting from US$109 and there is a wonderful charm to this simple but cozy hotel lovingly created by English-born Wendy and now managed by her charming son Joaquin.

We think it´s definitely worth paying the extra for one of the superior second floor rooms that have balconies. Rooms 12, 15 and 16 have the best views of the surrounding mountains and the gardens.

If you have time, don’t miss their Pachamanca lunch which is cooked in the traditional stone oven before your very eyes!

If you are just passing through Ollantaytambo amongst the crowd that comes and goes to Machu Picchu from this small town, you may miss the opportunity to discover the picturesque streets and hidden treasures in the heart of this Inca town. At the end of one of these quiet, cobble-stoned streets at the foot of the Pinkuylluna mountain lies the Apu Lodge Hotel Ollantaytambo, an excellent budget bed and breakfast style accommodation option.

Far from the noise of the train station, the Apu Lodge enjoys great tranquility and silence accompanied by a poetic view of the ruins of Ollantaytambo and the surrounding mountains, which justifies the lack of televisions in the rooms. Rooms are comfortable, simple, en-suite and decorated with local artwork. Apu Lodge is also family-friendly and has a purpose built family suite available for those travelling with children.

A basic continental breakfast is included in room rates but by far the biggest plus to staying at this hotel is the huge wealth of information owner Louise has built up about the region. Staff is more than happy to help you plan trips, treks and visits to neighbouring communities.

English-born Louise is extremely involved in local development projects and brings her expertise and dynamism to both the hotel and the many projects she assists such as the Yachay Wasi organization which aims to improve local children’s education. She is a firm presence in the local community and it’s interesting to have a chat with Louise about the realities of the local area during your stay here.

The Apu Lodge has some of the best showers in the Sacred Valley in this category of accommodation!

The other big plus to this hotel is the spacious and lovingly-cared for garden which has some nice lounge areas including hammocks and benches. The ideal spot to hang out and relax while taking in the great view of the Ollantaytambo ruins.

The Hotel Samanapaq in Ollantaytambo is hidden away behind a large unassuming iron gate at the entrance to Ollantaytambo town. Once you step inside the gate, you will be pleasantly surprised by the 3,500m2 of beautiful gardens that welcome you into this peaceful natural paradise and include a rose garden, various species of fruit trees and a cacti and orchid greenhouse.

The Hotel Samanapaq is run by the friendly Manela, her daughter Paola and her nephew Juan Pablo. The 20 rooms are simple, comfortable and spotlessly clean with great modern bathrooms. We were delighted to discover their fabulous Spanish-style showers in every room – definitely the best showers in Ollantaytambo!.

Manela and Juan Pablo are both charming hosts who love sharing their home with visitors from around the world. They aim to share ‘their’ Ollantaytambo with visitors as much as possible and as such encourage guests to use the communal lounge and dining area.

Manela is passionate about Ollantaytambo and regrets that this quaint town is often only considered as the departure point for Machu Picchu and that most visitors miss the huge cultural and historical richness of this region. Manela is a true expert on all things ‘Ollanta’ and loves nothing more than sharing with guests off the beaten track experiences and attractions such as archaeological sites and ancestral Incan trails. A real advantage to any stay here…

A home-made buffet breakfast is included in room rates and they will put on the log fire in the sitting room in the evenings if you ask.

Hotel Samanapaq is one of our favourite places to stay in Ollantaytambo in this price range and is a nice refuge from the busyness of Ollantyatambo.

Don’t miss the little watchtower on the roof where star-gazing is a real treat!

Some of the rooms in Hotel Samanapaq have recently been refurbished with ethanol heaters and have a more modern feel. Ask for one of the refurbished rooms when you book.

Rooms 6, 27 and 28 have not yet been refurbished but are perfectly comfortable and have lovely garden views.
